ALBI, CORDES & MORE...
The city of Albi is 20 minutes drive away and is famous for its 13th C cathedral built like a fortress dominating the town to celebrate the defeat by the Church of the Albigensian heretics. Close by is the Palais de Berbie containing a museum of the works of Toulouse Lautrec with beautiful gardens behind overlooking the river Tarn. The centre of the old town is full of fascinating shops, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes.
The ancient hill top town of Cordes Sur Ciel is less than an hour away and well worth a visit. There are many other medieval towns and villages close by with a multitude of restaurants and markets, while Toulouse, Carcassonne, the Millau viaduct and the Gorges du Tarn are all only a day trip away.
Ambialet, where the river Tarn flows round the village turning it into what is almost an island with the ancient abbey looking down, is only 8 miles up the river. For the energetic, golf, riding and tennis are all available locally. One of the best attractions of the district are the local weekly markets. Of the bigger ones, Réalmont every Wednesday and Carmaux every Friday (both about 20 miles away) are the best, while the St. Juéry market every Thursday is the closest (8 miles away) and the best of the smaller ones.
